The Training Center at Community Mental Health of Ottawa County
Additional Training Information
Registration For Training
Only supervisory staff and Adult Foster Care Home Providers may register their staff for training. Registration must occur prior to attending training or taking an on-line Netsmart University class. Staff should not attempt to register themselves and may be turned away from a training if they are not registered ahead of time. If a supervisor needs assistance with registering their staff, the supervisor should contact a staff member of the Training Center for help.
No Shows, Registration Cancellations and Rescheduling Policy
**No shows for any class will be charged $20.00 per missed class.
A “No Show” is defined as either:
- A person who is registered for a class but does not attend AND the Training Center was not given 24 hour notice prior to the class being held, and
- A late arrival who is not admitted to class. Classes begin promptly at the scheduled time. Late arrivals will not be admitted into the class. They will be instructed to contact their supervisor to reschedule.
When a supervisor becomes aware of a cancellation, the supervisor should immediately complete a “Class Registration/Cancellation” form and fax the form to the Training Center at (616) 494-5541.
If a $20 no-show fee is not paid within 60 days, registration for future classroom trainings will be suspended. Registrations will again be accepted after the fees have been fully paid.
Class Cancellation Policy
If Holland Public Schools, West Ottawa Public Schools, or Grand Haven Public Schools are closed, training classes for Holland and/or Grand Haven are canceled.
If there are less than 5 people registered for a class, the class may be cancelled the day prior to the scheduled class. If you are registered and we have record of a current phone number, you or your supervisor will be called directly.
Primary Training Requirements
- The Recipient Rights 4 hour class must be taken within 30 days of hire.
- To administer medications in the home(s), you must successfully complete a medication class and demonstrate medication competency. Staff working with Diabetic issues need to complete the Diabetic training.
- To perform physical intervention with a person receiving services, you must
successfully complete:
- Positive Behavior Support Practices
- Working With People - Human Needs & Communication
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention I & II
Training Expectations
- Trainees must sign the attendance sheet when arriving to a class.
- It is expected that staff will not work third shift prior to a morning/all day training.
- Staff who are visibly ill will be asked to leave the class to reduce the spread of infection.
- Trainees are expected to conduct themselves in a positive manner. This includes punctuality, attentiveness, and participation.
- Trainees must demonstrate competency throughout all skill demonstrations and must attain at least 80% on all written tests.
- Trainees who do not pass the written test or skill demonstrations may contact Lorrie at (616) 494-5410 to schedule a retake test.
- Injury free training is our goal! If an employee has a pre-existing condition that would prevent him or her from safely participating in physical skills practice (i.e. Lifting and transferring techniques, CPR demonstrations on the floor, or restraining techniques), the supervisor and trainee should evaluate whether the trainee can safely participate in physical skills practice. If it is determined that the employee cannot, the supervisor should contact the Training Center prior to sending the employee to training with a request to have the employee observe the physical skills practice. This action will be noted on the attendance sheet and employee’s training record.
- Cell phones can be used during break times in appropriate locations at each training site.
- Trainees should wear clothes that are appropriate for physical skill demonstrations. Skirts, dresses, high heels, and/or sandals are not recommended. Dressing in layers allows trainees to adjust for their personal comfort in the classroom.
- If there is an emergency, trainees can be reached by calling (616) 494-5410 or (616) 842-5350 (Grand Haven site).
Computer Lab
The “Computer Lab” is a monthly scheduled time for staff to come in to the Training Center and use the computers that are available to complete any Netsmart University classes that have been assigned. During this time, Training Center staff will be available to assist as needed.
Testing Out Procedure
If you have received training or education elsewhere which you believe meets the requirements for any of the courses, you may be able to test out of a class. Send a copy of your transcript, certification, or licensure to Matthew Postma or Lorrie Hackney at The Training Center. Your supervisor may send you to the Training Center on the scheduled “Testing Day” (noted on the calendar). No “test outs” will be done on the day of the class.
